THE BARONESS COW FAMILY...
In the 1980 Newbiggon dispersal Olive Aldridge purchased the white heifer Newbiggon Julie M. Julie M was named for Julie Melenka as they were the breeders of Julie M. Her dam was Melbros Silver Baroness 2nd a daughter of Lacombe Dock 45W. Lacombe Dock 45W came from the Lacombe Research Station herd and was of horned beef breeding. The dam of the 2nd was Ball Dee Silver Baroness by Ball Dee Silver Carona and out of Baroness 3rd. Baroness 3rd was the foundation dam of the Baroness family at Dave Ball’s Ball Dee herd. Baroness 3rd was born in 1959 and is the ancestress of a lot today’s females carrying the Baroness name and some like the Lass family at Benders that dropped the Baroness name. At 13 years of age in 1970 Baroness 3rd produced the bull Miami Baron 20B. He was a herd sire at Frimley and the Diamond and has been brought back in out Heritage Shorthorn program. The sire of Newbiggon Julie M was a dual purpose bull, Blue Rock Royal Roan. Newbiggon Julie M came to Diamond Shorthorns on a share program with Olive Aldridge. She produced a herd bull for AR (Sandy) Cross, Rothney Farms, a bull named Ulysses 4U. She also produced three daughters OA Diamond Julies Baroness 34W by Diamond Trail Master 8T, OA Diamond Julies Baroness 32X by Deer Trail Private Eye, and OA Diamond Julie Baroness 29Z by Diamond Mr X 6X. These Baroness cows and their descendants have gone on to produce many brood matrons for Diamond Shorthorns and our customers. They are spread from Alberta to Quebec to Texas. The Baroness family traces back to one of the first cows imported to Canada, Beauty (30). This cow was one of the most prolific in the herd book. Today several Baroness cows carry on this fine family in the Diamond herd.
